Breastfeeding struggles

When I was pregnant for the first time, I was actually surprised when someone asked if I was planning to breastfeed. Somehow, it Β had never crossed my mind that this was a decision you could make. I just assumed that breastfeeding is what every mother does and so it would be what I’d be doing, too. Maybe that has something to do with my mother always telling me how I used to run to her boobs when I was already three years old ;-). Only when I started to read more about the subject I discovered what a heatedly discussed topic the choice for breastfeeding versus the alternative of using formula was…

Hypnobirthing – the aftermath

In an earlier post that I published at the end of my pregnancy, I told about my experiences with hypnobirthing class and what I hoped to achieve with it. Of course, it was not just for fun that I practiced it.. The goal was a smooth labour. Did it help? Was there a difference between labour with hypnobirthing techniques and without them? Today I’ll share my personal conclusions…

My nursing wardrobe

If there’s something that felt like a disadvantage of breastfeeding, it’s always having to consider it when getting dressed to leave the house. With the pregnant belly gone, I was a bit bumped that I couldn’t wear all the clothes I had missed for so many months. But by now, I have a choice of pieces that make it easier to nurse discretely in public. While I wear whatever fits at home, I feel most comfortable going out knowing it won’t be a hassle to nurse with what I’m wearing.

The (second) first smile

One thing I sometimes worried about when I was pregnant for the second time, was that this child wouldn’t get as much love and attention as our first one. I know many moms foresee that for their second baby and I was no different. And even though I was reassured many times that you’ll love the second one just as much, I just couldn’t imagine anything coming close to what I feel for Henrik..

Handy newborn items

In preparation of our second baby’s arrival, I purchased quite a list of things I knew we’d need to make our lives as parents of a newborn easier during the very first phase. But even with a second baby, you often find out which are the handiest things to have and discover new ones as you go. So here’s a list of items I didn’t have the first time but that I have found to be especially helpful these last couple of weeks…

A babymoon

Amongst all the things I did during my first pregnancy, my babymoon is one of my dearest memories. I can’t stress enough how much I’d advise any mom-to be to plan one. If you have an issue-free pregnancy and feel fit to travel, this is the time to plan your – at least for a while – last baby-free trip. There’s lots of babymoon options of course: spend a long weekend or a romantic holiday as a couple, plan a trip with your girlfriends, attend a retreat by yourself.. Whatever you choose to do, it basically comes down to spending quality time with yourself, the people close to you, and having lots of time to do whatever you please whenever you please before your newborn baby will turn your world upside down.

Newborn lessons

Two weeks have passed since I became a mother of two. With this second baby, people refer to me as an ‘experienced mother’. Although I certainly can make use of some experiences gained the first time around, I have often felt like a newbie again. Here’s some newly learned lessons from the last weeks..

Hello from the pink bubble!

So today was my due date, but I cannot share a pregnancy update – I didn’t make it to 40 weeks. I am not pregnant anymore and officially the mother of two (!) children. My midwife was right after all and I didn’t make it to my beauty day on Tuesday. Our baby girl Stella decided it was time to get to know each other last Sunday, and I can’t believe it’s already been a week. Even though I had expected to be pregnant at least for a few more days, I was also more than ready. The last days often felt as I was carrying a bowling ball (and moving accordingly) and I started to get grumpy. Read More

Hypnobirthing class

Since I like being prepared and that definitely goes for giving birth, I looked into hypnobirthing during this second pregnancy. Being 39 weeks pregnant now, I cannot tell my actual experience with the hypnobirthing techniques during labour just yet. But as I often got questions about what hypnobirthing was when I told people I’d take a class, I want to share some facts about it here and what my experiences have been so far.

Pregnancy update: 39 weeks!

What a pregnancy week this 39th and hopefully second last has been.. Having a little chickenpox patient to care for meant I canceled basically all points on the agenda. No swimming, no pregnancy massage, no playdates. Not that I can complain, Henrik is hardly ever ill and if he is he hardly behaves like it. So I felt extra sorry seing him like that. And I am glad that he got sick now and I was able to give him all the time and attention he needed. Also, the weather was so crappy this week that we didn’t have to feel sorry at all for hardly leaving the house.
